"Surfers Paradise is the heart of the Gold Coast, the place where its aims and aspirations are most evident. It's a firm tribute to the successful marketing of the Aussie lifestyle as an eternal beach party" - Rough Guide
I had to steal that description because I think it sums up Surfers Paradise perfectly. It's still a very scenic place, and has some wonderful beaches, but the emphasis here is certainly on the party vibe! Packed with clubs and bars (and 5 Irish pubs!), the general thing to do here is to go out at night, and recover on the beach during the day. So go out we did...
And, yes, we did spend the following day recovering on the beach. But there isn't much in the way of sightseeing to do here. However, we did make a point of heading to the Q1 Tower on our last day. The tower was the world's tallest residential building when it opened (80 storeys and 322.5m) and has a 'SkyPoint' observation deck on the 78th floor.
Aiming to catch the sunset, we got there while it was still light and admired some great views over the city, the beach, and the mountains in the distance.
There's a bar on the observation deck (of course!) so we stayed at the top of the tower with a couple of drinks while the sun went down. Unfortunately, it was a little too cloudy to see much of the brilliant sunset we'd hoped for, but the skies still looked stunning, and it was great to see the city at night from above.
